Monasteries & stupas

Walk through sacred spaces shaped by centuries of Buddhist and Hindu traditions.

Buddhist stupas are among Nepal's most powerful sights. Boudhanath, one of the largest in the world, is the heart of Kathmandu's Tibetan community; at dusk hundreds of people walk the circuit around it, spinning prayer wheels and murmuring mantras.

Swayambhunath sits on a hill west of the city, its golden spire painted with the watchful eyes of the Buddha. In the mountains, monasteries like Tengboche in the Everest region host morning prayers you can quietly attend.

Always walk clockwise around stupas and turn prayer wheels to the right. Dress modestly, remove your shoes in prayer halls and ask before taking photographs of monks or ceremonies.
