Indra Jatra is Kathmandu's great street festival, honouring Indra, the god of rain. It begins with the raising of a tall ceremonial pole near Kathmandu's Durbar Square.
For several days the old city fills with masked dancers — including the red-faced Lakhe — and the huge mask of Bhairab is displayed. The highlight is the procession of the Kumari, Kathmandu's living goddess, pulled through the streets in her chariot.
Arrive early for a spot around Durbar Square, keep an eye on your belongings in the crowds, and check dates locally, as they follow the lunar calendar.
