Dal bhat

The meal that carries travelers, families and mountain journeys.

Dal bhat is the meal most Nepalis eat twice a day: a mound of rice (bhat) with lentil soup (dal), seasonal vegetable curry (tarkari), sautéed greens and a sharp pickle.

On trekking routes it's the smart order — freshly cooked, filling, and in most places your plate will be topped up until you say stop. Trekkers joke about “dal bhat power, 24 hour” for good reason.

Every region and household makes it differently, from Thakali sets in Mustang to simple home versions in the hills. Eat it the local way, with your right hand, mixing a little of everything in each bite.
